Design Decisions Underlying Virtual Conversational Character Scripting Languages
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper addresses the design decisions present in the field of virtual conversational character scripting languages. These languages combine narrative and physical actions (of the face, body, voice etc.) to “direct” the performance of a virtual conversational character. VHML is one such language and will be used to give a real-world example context to a discussion of design decisions underlying character-scripting languages. The role of standardization and the issues presented by these decisions will also be discussed.

Two approaches to Scripting Character Animation
Lifelike animated agents present a challenging ongoing agenda for research. Such agent metaphors will only be widely applicable to on-line applications when there is a standardised way to map underlying engines with the visual presentation of the agents. This paper delineates functions and specifications of two mark-up languages for scripting the animation of virtual characters. These languages...
متن کاملIntroducing the Cast for Social Computing: Life-Like Characters
Lifelike characters are one of the most exciting technologies for human– computer interface applications. They convincingly take the roles of virtual presen-ters, synthetic actors and sales personas, teammates and tutors. A common characteristic underlying their believability or life-likeness as conversational partners is computational models that provide them with affective functions such as s...
متن کاملScripting and Evaluating Affective Interactions with Embodied Conversational Agents
This paper describes the results obtained and ongoing agenda of a research project on embodied conversational agents, carried out at the University of Tokyo. The main focus points of the project are the development of scripting languages for controlling life-like agents and the modeling of affective interactions between agents and human users. Furthermore, the project aims at evaluating the imp...
متن کاملA Question of Character: Rules to Play by
Almost every type of computer game has some sort of AI scripting language which enables level designers to script a story arc for a mission or game level and to provide personalities and individual responses to different characters in a game. And whether the "characters" in a game are 3D polygonal virtual actors the player explicitly interacts with or virtual generals who direct massive armies ...
متن کاملTowards Developing an Easy-To-Use Scripting Environment for Animating Virtual Characters
This paper presents the three scripting commands and main functionalities of a novel character animation environment called CHASE. CHASE was developed for enabling inexperienced programmers, animators, artists, and students to animate in meaningful ways virtual reality characters. This is achieved by scripting simple commands within CHASE. The commands identified, which are associated with simp...
